Stressful businessman in the office with team in the background

Do you lead a stressful life? Do you find it hard to sleep at night?

Recent research has found that men who are stressed and suffer sleepless nights run double the risk of contracting diabetes. This research was carried out over a 10 year period in Sweden and analysed 2127 men. The results found that men who had psychological distress were twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes. They classed psychological stress as anxiety, apathy, depression, fatigue and insomnia. The researchers felt that it was more likely in men due to them bottling up their feelings and not knowing how to de-stress.

Type 2 diabetes is defined as non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Type 2 diabetes is a life long disease which is characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone released by our pancreas, diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t respond correctly. Unfortunately type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing in the developed world. Other known risk factors are a diet high in fat and an inactive lifestyle.

So by modifying your diet and taking on consistent and regular exercise such as a brisk 45 minute walk every other day you can reduce the risk.

Often people with type 2 diabetes show no symptoms for a long time. If you do have symptoms they may include

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Fatigue
