Tips for Ragweed Allergy

dreamstime_1310075-allergy_300dpiRagweed, found growing in fields and beside roads, is responsible for most of late summer and early fall allergy symptoms like runny nose and itchy eyes but can also lead to more serious problems such as sinus infection and asthma.

The reason for this is the huge amount of pollen (about one billion pollen grains) each ragweed plant produces. The particles are very light and may travel distances of over 500km so even city residents don’t escape.

It’s difficult to avoid ragweed pollen because it is so widespread in season. To limit the symptoms caused by ragweed allergy, follow these important rules:

  1. Use regular medical treatment such as anti-histamine tablets plus steroid nasal spray or inhaler for more severe local symptoms.
  2. Start treatment early – 1-2 weeks before the ragweed season starts.
  3. Continue treatment for 2-3 weeks after the season ends.

In severe cases, consult with your doctor or an allergy specialist regarding allergy shots.
