Flu vaccines 2017-18

The 2016-17 Flu season has arrived!

Special Saturday or Hűvösvölgyi location price (see below)

Influenza vaccines contain non-living, inactivated versions of the flu virus. Although it is not possible to catch the flu from this inactivated vaccine, latent other pathogens in the body may emerge due to the immunological changes as a result of receiving the vaccine, which the patient may feel has caused flu-like symptoms.

Current vaccination

Starting this flu season, a new 4-component vaccination is on the market.

VaxigripTetra™ is a four-strain  influenza vaccine, containing two A strains (A/H1N1 and A/H3N2) and two B strains (B/Victoria and B/Yamagata), for use in individuals aged 36 months or older. The recommended influenza strains are chosen by committees at the World Health Organization and EMA based on which strains were most common in the previous flu season. For this season, the recommended blend of vaccine can be different from previous vaccines.

About the vaccines

  • Vaxigrip – (intramuscular)
  • For Children: There no longer is a ‘junior’ version of this vaccination. Children from 3 years to 17 years of age: one dose of 0.5 ml.
For children less than 9 years of age who have not previously been vaccinated, a second dose of  0.5 ml should be given after an interval of at least 4 weeks.
Most children over the age of 3 years will receive a half dose depending on doctor recommendation. Please ask before scheduling your appointment.

Age-related recommendations

  • The vaccine cannot be used for children younger than 36 months.
  • 3 to 14 years: The Vaxigrip Tetra vaccine has to be administered by a pediatrician.
  • 14 to 18 years: The Vaxigrip Tetra vaccine may be administered by a nurse, there is no need for a doctor’s consultation.
    • In certain cases, the vaccination must be repeated after 4 weeks for children, especially if this is their first vaccination for influenza. Our colleague will inform you if this is the case for your child.
  • 18 and over: The Vaxigrip Tetra vaccine may be administered by a nurse, there is no need for a doctor’s consultation.
  • Over age 65: the additional administration of Pneumovax vaccine is recommended, which protects against pneumococcal infections. It can only be administered followed by a doctor’s consultation.
